I suspect it's for the same reason that Mymy got popular in the first place: you wouldn't expect political extremism from someone or something that looks so unthreatening, but it makes imageboardchuds go apeshit when it does happen.

actual creator of agugu here. here is my theory on how agugu was able to spread so much:
-it's easy to make (all you need is to make the eyes bigger and slap on a binky png), but the end result is very striking. whatever emotion it invokes in the viewer, it does it sharply and effectively. personally i find it very hilarious, some find it very cute, some find it very infuriating. so the effort-reaction ratio has pretty good margins, for little effort you get lots of reaction, and naturally many people wanted to indulge in this scheme.
-it is an exceptionally potent bait when used in soysphere environments, guaranteed to produce seethe. and as you know, soyteens require seethe to live. so many baiters preferred agugu.
-there is something about agugu that attracts autistGODs like a moth to a flame. if you have a certain type of 'tism you are prone to becoming obsessed with agugu. i think it's because of the huge shiny eyes and the thoughtless expression, makes autists relate to it on a spiritual level. and since there are many autistDEITIES in soyzellig, it thrived here.

There are many drawing/edit ideas that work with agugu, but wouldn't with normal Mymy or with 'jaks. Agugu eating ice cream, agugu in a blender, agugus climbing on Coco, agugu eating rat poison, agugu just lying on the floor, countless agugu variants with differing eye sizes or stretched hair, agugu with one binky, agugu with two binkies, agugu with no binky and crying, confused agugu, sad agugu, agugu looking this way or that way or doing some stupid shit, agugu cubes and so on. You can't draw Mymy like this and expect it to be equally funny. Most Mymy drawings can be divided into three categories: Mymy doing some normalnigger thing, Mymy doing a chuddy thing (shooting up a school or burning a flag for instance), goonbait. Soymy has more variation, although it usually boils down to changing hair/niggerwiggle colors or drawing her in a way resembling another character.

I also want to add that a similar thing happens with Maya, where's she's essentially a chuddy self insert at times and compared to 'cels like ER, or she ends up as a SISA. But interestingly, there's less variation with Coco, where she's either an Aryan killing machine or a spadequeen, there's no in-between
