Maya doesn't have a direction in life because she thinks she's a failure and when that doesn't happen (Coco tries to help her) she subconsciously does everything in her power for that reality to keep being true. Maya doesn't know anything else outside of being a loser, that is her only and forever will be her comfort zone, so when a person like Coco appears, her reality shatters and doesn't know how to act but shove people away.
