The references? I don't use references (as in a guide book or magazines with lots of poses) at all, it's mostly anatomy knowledge and some logic plus exaggeration
Sometimes I have to try a few times until I get a result that looks good enough.
I usually autistically stare at images I like to "understand" how they're composed, the rest I figure it out through trial and error
