The torch of civilization was passed from the Meds to the Germanics. No country from that region had been scientifically & economically relevant in a millennium and two and the Mediterranean is currently a shitty riverfront of stagnation and cultural decay that northern Europeans just use as a cheap vacation destination. To an extent east Asia has now surpassed the Germanics, and if Japan for example didn't have the Yen sabotaged by the Plaza Accord it would've done so already not to mention South Korea and China despite their downsides.
