>>24448 There are a few different reasons people might invent stories about themselves online or pretend to be other people. It doesn't necessarily mean the person has one particular mental-health condition. Why make up stories about themselves? Common motivations include: - Wanting attention or admiration. They may feel that their real life isn't interesting or impressive enough, so they create a more exciting version of themselves. Insecurity or low self-esteem. Pretending to be successful, popular, attractive, wealthy, or well-connected can temporarily make someone feel better about themselves. - Wanting sympathy. Some people invent tragedies, illnesses, relationship problems, or other hardships because the attention and emotional support feel rewarding. - Escaping reality. The online identity can become a fantasy version of who they wish they were. Social status. They may fabricate connections to celebrities, accomplishments, relationships, or experiences to gain credibility or status within a community. - Compulsive lying. For some people, lying becomes habitual and they continue even when there isn't an obvious practical benefit. - Manipulation or financial gain. Sometimes the deception is deliberate and instrumental—for example, to obtain money, gifts, followers, or influence. Why would someone reply to themselves pretending to be someone else? That's a somewhat different and more elaborate form of deception. It can serve several purposes: - Creating the appearance of popularity. They can make it look as though other people agree with, praise, or support them. - Making their stories seem believable. A fake "friend" or "witness" can supposedly confirm what they've claimed. - Arguing with critics. They can manufacture another account to defend themselves or attack someone who challenges them. - Giving themselves emotional validation. Receiving praise from a fake identity can provide a feeling of approval without having to risk rejection from a real person.
