It is a joke since two different regions can be referred to as brabant, but with many other things in ongezellig the jokes are still based on a truth of the lore. The joke doesn't make sense if it is assumed that they lived in brabant, because a situation like that wouldn't occur. The mind-state of coco is that she heard maya was born in brabant and thinks of the belgian brabant instead of the dutch, therefore thinks she was born in belgium, if they lived in brabant coco would know the province they lived and not assume the other brabant.
Furthermore it wouldn't be said that maya was born in brabant but rather maya was born in baarle-nassau in the case it was brought up with the implicit understanding that she was born in the same province as they currently are. If they lived in a different province it would be said that maya was born in brabant with the city being possibly mentioned too, but that is a forgettable detail in a conversation.
