Everyone's condition is in some way related to their circumstances but people are still in charge of their lives, they still have the opportunity to act virtuously and rise above. Maya doesn't do this. You can recognize that her circumstances are unfavorable while also recognizing it's on her for being such a wretch. You can pity her, sympathize with her, but there's still nothing to like about her.
