To make tasteful orchestral music it takes serious dedication to learn the orchestral tradition, then to innovate on top of that in a way that isn't tacky is very difficult. Which is why I say it is fine for what he made, because only if someone really likes classical music would they put in the effort to learn this style, which is not everyone.
