Maya has already opened up to the interpreter. She tells you her issues, her thoughts, you know what she worries about. Maybe you can relate purely to her actions, but she pours out her soul and mind to you too. You understand Maya, and you know she would understand you too. I knew a girl in high school who was very much like Maya: could've been really attractive if she got herself in order, had a mixed ethnic background and was out of place in the country, didn't talk to people. But I did not know her thoughts, I did not know her worries, and not under pain of death would have have told anyone. That's the difference: you have a deep personal connection to Maya. Watch Ongezellig, but cut out her internal monologues. You are left with a disorganized, silent girl who can't get anything done.
