I find this to be most likely. He worked for 13 months on a deel alone or seven with an aide. Based on the leaked q&a he placed a lot of his own experiences into Maya, and when he cancelled the show the deels sat at very low viewcounts compared to the current numbers, so he likely wasn't going to stop just because it did not get famous enough for his liking.

If he wanted funding, he'd have done as other zaryans suggested and market it to an english speaking audience. He'd still be able to express himself, and if he cut down on the holocaust jokes he might've even been able to pitch it to some studio or producer.

For him to stop when he did only makes sense if he lost interest, I think. If he was interested in the show, it's characters and messages he would've kept on making more short deels.
