There may be serious social and even legal consequences of openly saying what you believe if what you believe goes too far beyond what is acceptable in your environment. In such a situation, it would be idiotic and autistic to do that, and smart people will take advantage of anonymity to move the Overton window in their preffered direction before going public. What really matters is whether your beliefs are based on your own conviction and deliberate reasoning, or a desire to fit in.
