The biggest enemy you need to fight and overcome is your mind. 
I've been studying female psychology for a long while now, and knowing how your friends already see that you have potential in talking to the girl you like, go for it!
Start with asking her likes and hobbies, then go from there. The hardest part of talking to a woman is not actually the conversation itself, but the mindgames you battle before trying to start a convo with her.
Take the risk, the girl won't hate you for talking to her. She'll be happy to talk to you once you start initiating. Women love men who lead, especially the convo. Make sure you ask open-ended questions, especially those that make her smile and laugh. Add teases and joke around with her every now and then with her replies, and add a little bit of teasing every now and then.
