the "wild party/indulging in revelry/rising up to play" written in Exodus 32:6 is not a regular party, it requires elite Ba'al knowledge to know what kind of party that "wild party" is. some people did just drink and dance, their punishment was being forced to drink the gold used in making the cow. but the punishment of some others is straight up getting killed, these are the ones who took the ritual too far and did jartycucked things. we know this from what happens later on in 32:27, moses seperates the ones that did it, orders people to take their swords and kill their brothers and neighbors that indulged in this ritual, and 3.000 people get killed there. the golden calf ritual was not something that they invented on the spot, we know from the history of the area that this type of ritual was done around canaan by the jartycucks of that time, they took it from them, and the ritual is not just about drinking and dancing, it's about indulgence and perversion was a part of it
