picrel only makes sense superficially. Japan, Iberia and Northern Africa were barbaric lands until they were civilized (and Central Asia was never civilized except in cities that stood on trading roads, and even then they practiced barbaric customs). in the EXACT same way Germanic and Slavic peoples adopted civilization. outside of Europe that would be Southern China, Yemen/Ethiopia (with Christianization, it's not foreign influence actually), African Islamic kingdoms (Islam isn't civilized, but that's all these people knew at that time. they haven't advanced to a higher stage now so they're barbarians today)
