Plenty of latin american socialists present the spanish empire in exactly this light, and specifically contrast it as progressive and racially tolerant compared to the Anglo colonial system in America and Canada, which was more rigid in its division between white, black, and red. Some of the most diehard even go so far as to say the spanish themselves are not white, because of the moors, and so the spanish empire couldn’t have been white supremacist.
