The hatred of Mormons (or Latter Day Saints/LDS) started around 1830 when Joseph Smith was tarred and feathered in Ohio. Mormons have a thing called the law of consecration where all your property belongs to the church. Symonds Ryder, a disgruntled Mormon, claimed Smith had tried to steal the property of a family living there causing a mob to form and tar and feather him due to preexisting suspicion of Mormon beliefs. Smith then escaped to Illinois before being shot by another mob in 1844. This religious persecution led Brigham Young to travel west to what is now Utah and form the proposed territory of Deseret. As the Mexican-American war continued President Buchanan sent US forces towards Deseret leading to the Utah war. After losing the war Mormons renounced polygamy and the state of Utah was admitted into the union in 1896. This was due to the Morrill act passed by President Grant in 1871 as polygamy was still practiced by fundamentalists until statehood. All of this has led to a general dislike of Mormons as well as their strange beliefs like the Native Americans being the descendants of the Israelites leading to them being seen as a cult or heretical or a Christian Islam. Online, some right wing people look at the surface level aspects such as it being majority White or historically banning racemixing (but mixing with Native Americans is fine because they view them and retroactively Jews as White) and think it's based compared to Catholicism with all the browns or Protestantism with all the lgbt. Christians hate them for being heratics and sjws hate them for being racist.
