Imagine if the Israelites just forgave the Medianiites, would they reciprocate? But the reason for cutting down of the sinners' offspring is stated in Job 27:12. Which I think makes sense, as the parents would in theory pass down their behavioral genes so it's better to be safe than sorry here.
