>I(20M) am an Afrikaner who lives on a farm in South Africa. I watched ongezellig in its original Dutch and was pleasantly surprised by how well I could understand it and how similar Dutch is to Afrikaans. Coco swearing in Afrikaans I found especially funny. I was delighted to see some Afrikaans representation in animated media. <Le reddit space >After watching all 6 dele I wanted to know where I could see the more of these three silly girls, and did some more research on ongezellig lore, and I'm sure I was just as sad as everyone in fandom to see that ongezellig had been discontinued. But I loved all the art that the fandom made and shared. <le reddit space >I know it's not official ongezellig lore, but I thought it was great that the fandom seemed to accept that Coco's parents were victims of a farm-murder. Farm-murders are an issue the boers have been tackling for years now. >The South African government has denied that farm-murders are happening while the boers have been trying to raise awareness of the issue. There isn't a "white-genocide" happening in South Africa, but the State has created and environment in which it is tolerable for the boers to be frequently terrorised. Farmers are subject to extremely restrictive self-defence laws, the police don't investigate farm-attacks/murders, and if attackers are caught, the courts don't punish it heavily. This environment emboldens criminals into thinking that they can get away with farm-attacks. I just thought it was good to see some recognition about our issues. <le reddit space >More recently laws have been passed that would ultimately get the state power to decide where and in what language a child should be educated in. This especially affect Afrikaans students in Afrikaans schools. South Africans have lost their property rights, Afrikaner businesses are being harassed by police, and laws have been passed that makes it harder for white people to start and own business or get jobs. <le reddit space >I can't help but feel like the Afrikaner identity is being attacked. I have been having a small crisis the past few weeks as my future became more uncertain and my identity as an Afrikaner was being attacked. Both State and international media where calling Afrikaners white-supremacist, racist bigots, who yearn for apartheid. >Disregarding our culture by stating that Afrikaners have no business owning farmland. <le reddit space >I found myself asking many questions, like am I racist for being born in Africa? Is it racist for me to speak my home-language? Am I a racist for wanting a gf/wife that speaks my language, shares my history, religion, values, and vision for the future? Is it racist for us to want to have kids, and wanting to raise them speaking our language, the language that our forefathers made after settling in Africa? Is it racist to want my family to live in a save community with other families that speak our language, and share our culture and values? Is it racist to teach our children a skill that is fundamental to society, and our culture has been doing for centuries and wanting them to further our culture? <le reddit space >That is all the Afrikaners want, but we’re being governed by people who don’t have our best interests at heart. They don’t care about our people, language, culture or rights. <le reddit space >It seems easy to become disassociated, nihilistic, or cynical about the situation, but I found comfort in the amazing art this fandom produces, especially of Coco. Coco’s attitude toward the world and other people, despite of her traumatic past, I find inspiring. To me, Coco is a symbol of the Afrikaner spirit, and it gives me hope for the future for me and my fellow Afrikaners. >Thanks to all the artists for contributing their artwork for all of us ongezellig fans to enjoy. Keep it up. <le reddit space He's ALMOST there, but of course the reddit mentality won't let him realize that he is effectively being genocided in his own home. I feel extreme pity for these people, because they don't deserve this but they also don't realize what is currently happening
