Fair opinion and I'd even would share it if I didn't know them personally, but we'll come to this later. At first, Ukrainians aren't just cossacks. Some of them have cossack blood, mostly in southern part of a country, but most of Ukranians are descendants of peasants whose lands were a battlefield between Poland and Russia(and sometimes Ottomans) numerous times. They are like Russians(or east slavs, if this term is incorrect here), who was part of the one of two centers of power on the lands of former Rus'. That's why we started to differ from each other, Muscovites and Lithuanians spoke different dialects and lived in different countries. Also western part of Rus'(or it's nobles, at least) was exposed to polonisation, that's why they have a lot of polonisms and germanisms that they got through the Polish language. BUT THEN, Tsardom of Russia conquers a lot of lands from Poland and gets all this east-slavic speaking and loyal(cuz of Orthodoxy) population. After this only foreign influence they felt was from Crimean Tatars probably. Most of Ukranian lands was under Russian controll for hundreds of years and a lot of people considered themselves as Velikorosses(Russians from Russia), even though they spoke mostly Malorossian dialect(as it stated in population census). Cities like Kiev were a important centres of Russian nationalism and a lot of locals supported supported General Denikin when he took Kiev from bolsheviks and even Galician Army preffered him over Petlyura. Ukrainians and Russians weren't separated and didn't hate each other 100 years ago as they do now.
Now to Ukrainians that I personally know. Most of them from the east, like Kharkov, Kiev, Donetsk(evendoe these consider themselves as Russians) etc. Their native language is Russian. They are consuming Russian culture(even now). Some of them moved to Russia or EU, some of them stayed in Ukraine, they are mostly pro-Ukranian(except for Donetsk people), and they started to care about their nationality ONLY after we invaded them. That's why I think that most of them literally same people with us, being Ukrainian for them is just a political orientation. And I think that if they lived in Russia for 5-10 years they'd started to associate themselves with Russia. Until we aren't too late we should return what borsheviks stole from us and if we'll actually be late... so be it.
