Imagine if commies ruled in Germany and said that, for example, Bavarians, aren't Germans anymore and and then developed Bavarian culture separately from the German one for 100 years + cut off pieces of land from Bavaria with the Bavarian population and gave them pieces with, for example, Thuringians. Bavarians, as far I know, culturally closer to Austrians than to northern Germans but they still consider themselves German. Would they associate themselves with Germany if they were put in such conditions? That's how all this mess looks for Russians, at least.
