>>1601 First we were part of Southern Netherlands after the Netherlands split in two because war. Then we became part of France because war. The French lost and we became part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 1830 the Southern Netherlands rebelled during the Belgian Revolution because of religious and linguistic differences. Many also just didn't like King William. We also have a small German-speaking community that we annexed from Germany after WWI so we have three different official languages. There's also a growing Flemish Movement that wants either independence or unification with the Netherlands.
