>>854 The sanctions were a complete fucking meme, just like the ones on Russia. Do you think anyone stopped buying our gold, platinum, diamonds and Uranium? geg obviously not. Even with the more damaging sanctions such as the ones on oil didn't hit as hard as you would imagine. The country developed a robust coal liquification program to cheapen fuel, and there were always third parties such as Glencore that were willing to smuggle for the right price. What really did us in as I see it was that when we modernised our industry with managerial standards and modern practices in the 60s the demand for skilled labour went up immeasurably. This gave the black population enormous leverage in organised labour and such things, and it also lead to a ballooning urban population of black people where unrest was always high. This did not get any better thanks to the political divide between the verligtes (liberals) and verkramptes (conservatives in government). This rivalry lead to the Mouldergate affair and the election of PW Botha, a Verligte from the Cape. His horrible policies and half assed reforms undermined the legitimacy of the regime. By the time De Klerk came to power there was so much unrest and such a shitshow that he really had nothing else to do. Thank you for listening to my speech
